That's minus 7.7 C outside my office - with the Wind Chill Factor making it minus 17C (officially), in our bit of Freezeland.
Just up the road, opposite the restaurant...
Teaching the kids to skate - they usually start by hanging on to a wooden chair.
And in Amsterdam, the Police issued a social media warning that the ice "is unreliable". They had several reports of people having to be pulled out of the water.
Earlier in the week at another place, a 75 yo man had fallen through the ice and subsequently died.

Having a fun time sorting out my (old) charts for the trip to Maastricht. The Amsterdam-Rhine Canal looks nice and direct, but the maximum speed of the BIG ships is 18 km/hr, so we might just avoid that!
(from Google Translate)
Weesp
In Weesp are three marinas. Marina WSV De Vecht, Marina WSV De Zeemeermin and WSV Weesp. All ports have sufficient facilities. Weesp is a picturesque town with many attractions. The old fortified town has two forts, the tower fort the Ossenmarkt and Fort Uitermeer. If you stay one night you can try if there is a performance of your liking in Theater City or Wesopa.
If you decide to continue your journey, you will arrive in Breukelen via Vreeland and Loenen. There are many berths within this route, but without facilities. In the meantime you have passed the Loosdrechtseplassen. Maarssen is the next stop. This place is the last one before you enter the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal.

Sailing on the Amsterdam / Rhine Canal
Once from the Vecht you can do the 11 kilometers that have to be sailed on the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal at a considerable speed, this of course depends on your engine power. The maximum speed on this channel is 18 km for all ships. It is important to keep a starboard wall. On Sunday it is considerably quieter than through the week. At the Zuidersluis we go towards Nieuwegein / Vianen.

Route 2
From Nieuwegein to Arnhem on the Lek and Lower Rhine
A water sports enthusiast wants to sail a bit on a river. This is necessary to come to Arnhem. This route goes along the beautiful Dutch river landscape. First, you will sail on the Lek but after Wijk bij Duurstede it will turn into the Neder-Rijn. You leave Nieuwegein via the Konninginnesluis and you turn left.

Culemborg
This is the first place you will encounter after the Hagestein lock. Only in a marina is the possibility to moor here. The city, with its old façades and buildings, has the status of Protected Cityscape. Sightseeing is assured when it comes to museums, here you will find the Elvis Presley Museum and the Gispen museum.

Wijk bij Duurstede
Before you sail past Wijk bij Duurstede you first cross the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal. Pay attention because this is a busy intersection. At Wijk bij Duurstede you can sail into the dead arm of the Lower Rhine. Here you will find 2 Marinas; the Rhine Lek and the Lunenburg. If you take the time you can visit the museum Dorestad. Here you will learn everything about the development of Wijk bij Duurstede. Wijk bij Duurstede is a nice town where gastronomy is of paramount importance. However, if you are going starboard, you will sail on the Lower Rhine towards Rhenen. A beautiful river landscape with the foothills of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug will pass you by.

Rhenen
The weir and sluice of Amerongen are already behind us when after a while Rhenen looms up. There is also a port of call in Rhenen. The name Rhenen is inextricably linked to the Second World War. The Grebbenberg, where heavy fighting was then, is part of the landscape. Of course, Rhenen is also known for the Ouwehands Dierenpark.

Wageningen
For Wageningen you sail port out of the port channel. Here you will find the marina of water sport association Vada. There are no other berths for Wageningen. Wageningen itself has more than enough in-house to stay for a while. The most famous is of course the World Hotel to the room where the capitulation was signed at the end of the second eworld.

Arnhem
You are already far from the province of Utrecht and that comes naturally because the boundaries of our provinces do not stick to the waterways. There are 2 marinas in Arnhem; Jachthaven Rowing and Sailing Association Jason and Jachthaven Valkenburg. You can also moor at the Rijnkade in Arnhem. However, this is not to be recommended due to the many freight traffic that passes here in combination with the high quay wall. Arnhem can be the end point of the journey or the beginning of a new adventure.

The further adventures of Ben...
...before he went to Malta, Ben had spent some time applying for scholarships to study in China; Shanghai, in particular.
Now, having returned from the PLUS 15C temperatures of Malta to the MINUS 15C of Amsterdam (Wind Chill), he has embarked on another "project".
It is still too early to know, so I don't want to be accused of counting my chickens...I was just interested to know that there is such a thing...
What’s the Road Trip Project?
The Road Trip Project is a European travel experience that will take 8 individuals on 4 routes across the continent between Spring and Summer 2018.
Four duos will embark on a European road trip in a minibus. Along the way, they will meet locals and experience the local vibe, discover projects that change people's lives for the better and explore unknown places and amazing landscapes.
(As I understand it, Ben has applied for the Baltic Route)
Now, Ben had to submit a video to apply. I presume it was about him and why he should be considered. He was actually selected in the first 2000! He then had a Skype interview and was further selected in the last 48!. Now it's getting exciting...
It looks interesting enough to follow even if Ben doesn't get selected... but imagine if he does!
Around the farm...
One of our workers had a birthday! One of our older boys, who swears like a trooper, has excellent English (and lots of other good qualities)... made a birthday cake...
From the newspaper...
The "Norwegian" prison that I wrote about a few weeks ago, is to close. 3-year lease finishes 1 September. Shortage of cells in Norway has been resolved. In 2015 there were 1038 convicted prisoners waiting for a cell. That number is now 141.250 Dutch jobs now in doubt at Veenhuizen. It is said that Dutch prisoners can go there, but (fortunately) there are not enough!
It is also thought that the warders are needed in the Randstad, but that would mean relocation.

Do we have enough gas for this cold period? That question is being raised - the answer is yes, but household bills are expected to be much higher.
